An environmentally- conscious kitchen designed for safety, circulation and a multi-generational family

This design concept was developed as part of a student project I completed during my time at the Heritage School of Interior Design, Denver. All design features, appliances, fixtures, materials and finishes mentioned are real, active products that were specified in an original set of construction documents I created with AutoCAD. While this was not a commissioned client project, it does demonstrate our approach to personalized interior design services.

Made with Sketchup and Enscape.

At Fruition Interiors, our design approach goes beyond the decorative. With every project we embark on, our mission is to marry form, function, and our client’s personal flavor, within the context of helping our clients live in flow state. Our design process is influenced by our deep desire to create personalized spaces that withstand the test of time. We do that by getting to know our clients on a deep level, inspecting existing conditions of their space and getting clear on problems to solve before putting a design concept and subsequent plans in front of them. As part of that, we consider the following as we envision how our clients will live in the space in the near and long term:

  • How can we make daily tasks and functions within a space effortless, frictionless and dare we say, enjoyable?

  • How can we design with longevity in mind –in terms of durability, sustainability, and adaptability –especially when our client envisions a property to be their forever home?

The Project

For a multi-generational family of four, the kitchen in their 1950s bungalow was ready for an update. The clients were an active couple with a toddler and one elderly parent with mobility issues. We also can’t forget their small pup! For this family, the kitchen was truly the heart of the home. They had passion for healthy cooking, mindful consumption and environmentally-conscious living. Their ask? A kitchen that was beautiful and functional, mindful of accessibility challenges and equipped for everyday life. We reimagined their kitchen into a casual, warm and durable space influenced by their family values, lifestyle and love of modern Spanish design.

Thoughtful Workflow + Functionality

We configured the kitchen for circulation and safety, knowing that the family would often be in the kitchen together with multiple people cooking and hosting casual get-togethers for years to come.

Made with Sketchup and Enscape.

Key features in their kitchen re-design included:

  • A multi-functional island with integrated knife storage and a cutting board, hidden trash/recycling bins and seating for three

  • Two separate cleaning zones for multi-user cooking and food prep

  • Steam cooker/air fryer/oven combo appliance and an induction cooktop for efficient cooking

  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures and EnergyStar appliances to minimize utilities consumption

  • Clerestory windows + a skylight to wash the room in natural light without sacrificing upper cabinet storage

  • Addition of a paneled 2-drawer refrigerator by their new secondary sink for dedicated  beverage storage

Surprise Discovery. Unused space underneath the staircase adjacent to the kitchen was found. We opened it up to create a play area for the couple’s young son which could be repurposed for extra storage long after he outgrows it.

Integrated Pup Hydration Station. The family’s Jack Russell Terrier gained his own food and water bowl station, equipped with his own water bowl filler.

The Look

We leaned into a warm and neutral color palette, rich in subtle textures, and architectural gestures like reclaimed wood beams and rounded archways to create softness and comfort. Terracotta tile, zellige tile as the primary backsplash, and Sherwin Williams’ Radiant Dawn in Venetian plaster to cover the walls and ceiling added to the layers of texture of the overall design. Sintered stone countertops and semi-custom cabinetry add durability and elegance, while EnergyStar appliances ensure sustainability isn’t just a concept—it’s built-in.
